Coast Guard, Law Enforcement Maintain Presence in Potomac River Vessel Traffic Permitted to Move

Effective 5 p.m., Tuesday, September 25, the U.S. Coast Guard has lifted the Security Zone upon the waters of the Potomac River. While all vessels are permitted to transit the area, the U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies will continue their increased presence on the water to ensure the safety and security of the U.S. Maritime Transportation System. Boaters are reminded to follow the directions of Coast Guard and other law enforcement vessels.

Naval Vessel Protection Zones remain in effect within 500 yards of any U.S. Naval Vessel. This includes any vessel owned, operated, chartered, or leased by the U.S. Navy or under the Operational Control of the U.S. Navy. All vessels within 500 yards of a U.S. Naval Vessel shall operate at the minimum speed necessary to maintain a safe course and proceed as directed by the official patrol. An official patrol includes any Coast Guard commissioned, warrant, or petty officer, or the commanding officer of a U.S. Naval Vessel, or his or her designee. No vessel or person is allowed within 100 yards of a U.S. Naval Vessel, unless authorized by the official patrol. Vessels requesting to pass within 100 yards of a U.S. Naval Vessel shall contact the official patrol on VHF-FM Channel 16. Violations of these regulations are punishable as a felony.

The U.S. Coast Guard will continue to adjust waterway restrictions and vessel controls as conditions dictate.
