Meeting of Mr Javier Solana, EU High Representative, with Mr Rafik Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon

Brussels, 30 September 2001

Dr. Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met Mr. Rafik Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon, on Sunday 30 September for a working dinner on the Council premises at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting took place after the EU Ministerial Troika visit to five Arab and Islamic countries (Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Syria). The main issues addressed were EU-Lebanese relations, the latest developments in the Middle East region and the international response to the terrorist attacks of 11 September in the United States.

In Mr. Javier Solana' s words: "It was an opportunity to reiterate full support for the international campaign against terrorism". Mr. Solana also stated that "we are not against muslim countries, we are against terrorism".

Before the meeting, Hariri told the journalists: "Lebanon, as you know, is part of the international community. We are ready to cooperate totally with the international community, without reserve".
